Peaceful, tropical, quasi-bohemian—and quite unspoiled by mass tourism: Lamu is a place like no other. It’s not a surprise that the best things to do on Lamu include long beach strolls, dhow sailing, and exploration of the old Swahili settlements—with their unique coral-stone townhouses.

Relax at Lamu

The main town on the island of the same name just off Kenya’s northeastern coast, tranquil Lamu was founded in the 14th century, making it the country’s oldest living town and the best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. Lamu Museum (with its prized siwa horns) and the two-centuries-old Lamu Fort are two of the main attractions. The restored Swahili House Museum is small but quite interesting. About a 30-minute walk north of town, white sandy Shela Beach is one of the island’s best.

How to Get to Diani Beach

Plane
If you are flying from abroad, you are likely to touch down at Mombasa’s Moi International, about 30 miles north of Diani Beach.

Car
If you choose to drive from Mombasa, just follow the A14 directly to Diani Beach.

Train
The Mombasa–Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway is a standard-gauge railway in Kenya that connects the large Indian Ocean city of Mombasa with Nairobi, the country’s capital and largest city.

Bus
Privately run shuttle buses ply the route between Moi Airport and Diani Beach, and bus connections take around six hours to travel from the capital, Nairobi.

Ferry
Upon arrival in Mombasa, you will need a transfer to Diani via the Likoni Ferry. A ferry ride is only five – seven minutes from Mombasa Island to the South Coast. The Kenya Ferry Service does not charge people using the ferry.
